Project Description

North Dakota Veterans Home – Modern Long-Term Care Facility

In 2011, Comstock Construction, in collaboration with Foss Architecture & Interiors, completed the new North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND. This 160,000 SF facility was designed to provide a modern, comfortable, and home-like environment for honorably discharged veterans and their spouses in need of long-term care. The new facility replaces the outdated 150-bed home, incorporating the latest innovations in nursing home design and staffing efficiency while focusing on resident-centered care.

Project Scope & Design Features

The North Dakota Veterans Home was carefully designed to prioritize comfort, community, and independence. The facility is divided into three main care pods:

  • Two basic-care pods accommodating up to 98 residents.
  • One skilled-care pod designed for 52 residents.

Each pod consists of four interconnected households, each designed to house 12-13 residents. These households are centered around a large living room, an open-concept kitchen, and a communal dining area, creating a home-like environment with minimal medical signage.

At the heart of the facility is the center core, designed to resemble a small town main street, where residents can visit:

  • A bank, library, and barber shop
  • A pool hall and museum
  • A town hall and chapel
  • A movie theater for entertainment

This unique layout promotes socialization, independence, and familiarity, allowing residents to maintain a sense of normalcy and community.

Sustainable & Efficient Construction

The facility was designed with green technology in mind, utilizing a geothermal heating and cooling system with 738 wells to regulate the building’s temperature efficiently. This sustainable approach reduces energy consumption and ensures a comfortable indoor climate year-round.

Comstock Construction’s Role

As the general contractor, Comstock Construction played a crucial role in the site work, structural construction, and interior finishes, ensuring that the facility was built with durability, accessibility, and comfort in mind.

This state-of-the-art healthcare facility reflects North Dakota’s commitment to its veterans, providing high-quality, resident-focused care in a modern and sustainable environment. Comstock Construction is honored to have played a part in delivering a home that truly serves those who served our country.
