North Dakota Heritage Center Expansion & Renovation – Bismarck, ND
Completed in 2013, the North Dakota Heritage Center underwent a 97,000 SF expansion and renovation, transforming the state’s largest museum into a premier cultural and historical destination. Located on the Capitol Grounds in Bismarck, ND, this project was designed and engineered by HGA Architects and Engineers, with Comstock Construction serving as one of the multi-prime contractors.
Comstock Construction’s Scope of Work
The expansion nearly doubled the museum’s size, enhancing its ability to preserve, research, and share the state’s history. The project added:
- Three large exhibit galleries showcasing North Dakota’s past, from prehistoric times to modern history.
- A 200-seat auditorium and theater for educational programs, presentations, and events.
- A museum store and café to enrich the visitor experience.
- State-of-the-art research labs and archive storage for historical preservation and study.
- Additional offices and support spaces to accommodate growing staff and research needs.
Architectural Landmark & Cultural Destination
Designed to reflect North Dakota’s landscape and heritage, the renovation blends traditional and contemporary elements. The limestone exterior complements the existing Capitol campus, while the glass-and-steel Northern Lights Atrium serves as the museum’s signature entrance. Featuring petrified logs and glacial erratics, the atrium is the physical and spiritual heart of the Heritage Center, welcoming visitors with transparency and openness.
Enhanced Visitor Experience & Research Capabilities
With expanded exhibit space, cutting-edge research technology, and improved public amenities, the North Dakota Heritage Center has been revamped into a world-class facility. The updated design supports education, exploration, and preservation, ensuring that North Dakota’s rich history continues to be accessible and engaging for generations to come.
