ND State Fair Grandstand – Expanding Entertainment in Minot
In 2010, Comstock Construction, in collaboration with Zerr Berg Architects, completed the North Dakota State Fair Grandstand in Minot, ND. This new 7,200-seat grandstand doubled the capacity of its predecessor, significantly enhancing the fan experience and event capabilities at one of the state’s largest annual gatherings.
The North Dakota State Fair, held annually since 1922, is a cornerstone event for the region, drawing more than 350,000 attendees in recent years. The grandstand serves as a centerpiece for entertainment, hosting concerts, rodeos, motorsports, and agricultural showcases, as well as community and private events throughout the year.
Project Scope & Design Features
The grandstand was built using structural steel, precast stadia, and a full steel canopy to provide a covered seating area, improving comfort for spectators. The facility includes:
- Expanded seating capacity from 3,500 to 7,200 seats, with more spacious and comfortable arrangements.
- A new concert stage positioned at the infield of the dirt track for major live performances.
- A high-tech sound system affixed to the canopy, enhancing concert and event audio.
- A larger, accessible concoursewith 20,640 SF compared to the previous 1,400 SF, improving crowd flow.
Beneath the grandstand, additional spaces were constructed to support fairground operations and events, including:
- Concourse and ticketing areas with double the ticket windows (10 total) to streamline entry.
- Seven concession stands to better serve attendees.
- A pub for libations for the 21+ crowd.
- Expanded restroom facilities with 105 stalls for women and 82 for men.
- A multi-purpose exhibition/reception hall that can be used during non-event days.

With increased seating, improved accessibility, and modern amenities, the grandstand enhances the overall fair experience while supporting year-round entertainment opportunities.
