Enhancing Rural Healthcare: First Care Health Center
In 2007, Comstock Construction partnered with Engan Associates to complete a major renovation and expansion of First Care Health Center in Park River, ND. This project transformed the facility into a modern, patient-centered medical center, improving accessibility, safety, and operational efficiency for both patients and staff.
Comprehensive Renovation & Expansion
This project consisted of a 11,600 square-foot renovation to the existing 24,700 SF facility. Plus it added an additional 13,700 SF through a new building addition. The project included:
- Updated administrative offices
- Inpatient area to better support longer-stay patients
- Re-grading of the site to create a centrally located, fully accessible main entrance, replacing the previous half-story-above-ground entry.
- Life safety system upgrades, including emergency room enhancements, fire protection improvements, and accessibility upgrades.
By modernizing the layout and infrastructure, the hospital could better serve the growing healthcare needs of the community.
A Patient-Centered Approach
The one-story design emphasized accessibility, efficiency, and patient comfort. Support services were placed on the upper and lower levels to streamline operations, while the renovated inpatient and emergency areas ensured critical services met the latest healthcare standards.
Community-Driven Success
This project was more than just a renovation—it was a collaborative effort between the community, hospital leadership, medical staff, USDA, architects, and contractors. Local history and sentiment played a key role in the design, earning strong support from the Park River community.
