Project Description

Camp Grafton Regional Training Institute – Devils Lake, ND

Completed in 2010, the Camp Grafton Regional Training Institute (RTI) in Devils Lake, ND, is a premier military training center for the North Dakota Army National Guard. Designed by Zerr Berg Architects, this 183,000 SF, three-story facility provides advanced instruction for horizontal and vertical construction as well as combat engineering courses for the 164th Regiment. It is one of only five regional training institutes nationwide, playing a crucial role in developing military engineering expertise.

Multi-Prime Contracting Approach

This project was executed using a multi-prime contracting method, where the owner directly contracted multiple specialized contractors to handle different aspects of the build. This delivery method provided greater flexibility, improved cost control, and enhanced project oversight, ensuring that the complex training facility was completed efficiently and to the highest standards.

Advanced Training & Education Facilities

The RTI serves as a hub for military education and skills development, offering 25 fully accredited engineer courses annually. With a curriculum reaching beyond North Dakota, 60% of all Army National Guard and Army Reserve engineers nationwide receive training at this facility.

Key features include:

  • Classrooms & Distance Learning Spaces – Equipped with modern technology for in-person and remote instruction.
  • Engineering & Construction Labs – Hands-on training spaces for vertical and horizontal construction techniques.
  • Warehouse & Equipment Storage – Designed to house essential training materials and military resources.
  • RTI Administrative Offices – Dedicated workspaces for training staff and leadership personnel.

On-Site Billeting for Trainees

A dormitory wing was built as part of the RTI, providing 60 rooms to accommodate trainees during their courses. This integrated housing solution ensures that personnel have convenient access to training resources, allowing for a more immersive learning experience.

Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Design

  • LEED-Silver Equivalent Standards – Designed with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Geothermal Ground Source Heat Pump System – Utilized for cost-effective heating and cooling, reducing the facility’s environmental footprint.

Shaping the Future of Military Training

The Camp Grafton RTI plays a vital role in preparing soldiers for the demands of military engineering. With state-of-the-art training spaces, dedicated housing, and advanced sustainability features, this facility strengthens the North Dakota Army National Guard’s ability to train and equip personnel for critical engineering missions across the nation.
